Gerry Klaassen, Lieutenant-Colonel (retired)

The Nanaimo Concert Band is proud to be under the leadership of  Gerry Klaassen since the mid 1990’s. Mr. Klaassen has an  extensive musical background. In the military he played in the regimental bands  of the Canadian Guards, the Royal Canadian Artillery and the Royal Canadian  Regiment.  He was also training officer at the Canadian Forces School of  Music, Director and Commanding Officer of both the Naden Band, Esquimalt and the  Royal Canadian Artillery Band, Montreal.  He was then posted to National  Defense Headquarters, Ottawa where he was Staff Officer Bands then Supervisor of  Music of all Canadian Forces bands.  In that position he was also advisor  to the Minister of National Defense on issues regarding music in the Canadian  Forces.


In his spare time while in the the military and before he  became an officer, he played in night clubs, German bands, Polish  weddings, community musicals and other events where music was  required.  During his retirement here on the island he has  conducted local community bands, adjudicated music festivals  and plays flute and bass in bands and small groups.
